Thank you from your winner, Dave

Students! Help us decide which scientists and engineers should take part in the next event, and you could win a voucher. All you need to do is take 2 minutes now to judge these 12 sentences. Thank you so much for voting me as the winner of the Electromagnetic Zone! I am very happy and surprised to have won – I never expected to make it past the eliminations! I’d like to give a special mention to the I’m A Scientist team for organising and running everything so smoothly, as well as the other scientists in the zone. They are fantastic scientists and they all deserved to win. To all the students that asked questions in the Electromagnetic Zone: thank you! I had a lot of fun over the two weeks, interacting with you all, answering some really tough and thought-provoking questions. The questions came so rapidly, that I had … Continue reading

The third scientist evicted is…

Megan Maunder The votes were counted and recounted, but the result is in – Megan, it’s game over for you! Which means our four finalists are Katherine Graves, Dave Constable, Amelia Edwards and Arjuna James. They’ll be battling it out tomorrow to win your VOTE for the £500 prize money. What would they do with the money if they won? Katherine would: travel to schools in surrounding areas and share my love of nanoscience and experiences I’ve had through education, especially focusing on inspiring young women who may not have met a female scientist from a physics or engineering background. Dave would: like to visit my old high school and talk to students there about space science. Amelia would: give the money to the ‘Women in Technology’ group here at CERN. Arjuna would: visit to my old secondary school to tell the students what I do & how I got … Continue reading

Who’s taking part in the Electromagnetic Zone

I’m a Scientist, Get me out of here! is back this March. Between Monday 9th and Friday 20th, students will be putting their questions to 6 scientists in the Electromagnetic Zone. For the latest news and announcements about the event, find us on Twitter @imascientist, and follow the hashtag, #IASUK. Let’s meet the scientists and schools taking part… The Electromagnetic Zone is a themed zone supported by STFC. Megan Maunder | PhD Student, University of Exeter The Sun is constantly giving out energy. Sometimes this is in the form of large bursts of mass which hurdle towards Earth and can cause what we call Space Weather. I observe these large objects to try and learn more about them. Katherine Graves | PhD STudent, University of Leeds My experiments turn plastic waste into more valuable things, which I look at using x-rays and microscopes. Jesse Dykes | Optical Scientist, Qinetiq I work out … Continue reading
