My parents both worked at Universities, my dad in Pharmacy, my mum in Biology. I was around Universities a lot as a child, and so, I got to talk to lots of their colleagues about what they did.
I ended up having a career in Physics though! My family really encouraged me to be interested in science, and I always enjoyed learning how things worked. I took that encouragement but in my own direction.
My family has no background in science or any higher education, so it was all me. I get a lot of practice explaining physics to people who don’t know anything about it!
None of my family really have a background in science, definitely not my mum and dad!
It was something I discovered on my own. They are supportive of my job now even though they really don’t understand what I do!
If your family don’t have a background in science don’t let that stop you from following your own interest in science
No there’s no real background in science! My parents both went to university but they studied business. My older sister does science but followed the biology route, rather than the physics route. I really enjoyed science at school so I wanted to continue!

Whilst no one in my family is a scientist, they are definitely curious thinkers and I was always encouraged to explore and ask questions. I was also more interested in the humanities until my late teens.Broadly, I would say I was always supported by my family, but my passion for my present field was cultivated later in life; I didn’t know Space Weather existed until I was halfway through my undergraduate degree.
