The first work I did as a scientist was for a professor who wanted to use a laser to draw patterns on different objects, and asked me to put together a setup with a laser, some lenses and mirrors, and write some software to make it happen.

This is my first scientific job, but I did do an internship writing code for another academic once summer. It was a lot of hard maths and reading.

My first science job would have been my Ph.D. I studied new types of radio frequency devices and did a lot of computer simulations to try and make them more powerful.

My first proper science job was a research internship at King’s College London university. I was studying a group of chemicals called fluorescent molecular rotors and growing cells to test them in. It was a lot of fun.
